Mercury and Jupiter at Sunset

SPACE WATCH
Mercury and Jupiter at sunsetBy Göran Strand – When warm sunset hues begin to fade, two celestial beacons now shine in the evening twilight, Mercury and Jupiter. Wandering away from the Sun in planet Earth’s sky, Mercury will offer good views this month as spring approaches in the northern hemisphere where the ecliptic plane makes a steep angle with the western horizon. But Jupiter will continue sinking lower in the sky after sunset. In fact, the normally elusive Mercury shines well above Jupiter and the orange sunset glow in this serene sky. Captured earlier this week from the island of of Frösön in northern Sweden, the scene looks across Lake Storsjön toward the village of Hallen and distant mountains. Of course, even better views of Mercury can be had by the MESSENGER spacecraft, now orbiting the Solar System’s innermost planet!

The Catch-22 of Google Books

BookstoreBy John C Abell – How many books does a library make? For Google the answer is: “All of them.”

As of last August that particular number was about 129 million, and since then probably tens of thousands have been added to the world’s shelves.

Judge Denny Chin created something of a Catch-22: The opt-out system he struck down would seem fair enough if you knew how to find every author of every work. But to ask the question you have to be able to find the author.

Clearly copyright law hasn’t kept up with the pace of innovation — even if the Google Books project was limited only to works in the United States, which it is not. more> http://tinyurl.com/6k5542z

Wireless sensor networking chip market grew 300% in 2010

By Julien Happich – Shipments of 802.15.4-based WSN (wireless sensor network) ICs continued to show extremely strong growth in the second half of 2010 as demand for ICs for trials and early pilots returned after the sharp decline in 2009.

“2010 showed WSN IC shipment growth of more than 300 percent over the previous year,” said ABI Research principal analyst, Jonathan Collins, “largely due to severe impact of the recession on early-stage 802.15.4 adoption and trials.” more> http://tinyurl.com/4ee2xce
