Cupola’s View of Earth
NASA – When asked by a reporter if she noticed a difference in the International Space Station on her current visit with the Atlantis STS-135 crew, versus an earlier lengthy visit, STS-135 Mission Specialist Sandy Magnus mentioned the cupola’s addition, which was not on the station during her earlier stay there.

This photo showing Magnus, a NASA astronaut with the Space Shuttle Program’s final flight, taking advantage of the zero gravity of space and the panoramic view provided by the multi-windowed Cupola on flight day 9 of the STS-135 mission. July 16, 2011

Aurora Australis From Space
This image is of Atlantis and its Orbital Boom Sensor System robot arm extension backdropped against Earth’s horizon and a greenish phenomenon associated with Aurora Australis. One of the station’s solar array panels appears at upper left. Because of the exposure time needed for this type of photography, some of the stars in the background are blurred.

Cargo Transferred – Check!
On flight day 10 with transfer chores wrapped up, STS-135 Mission Specialist Sandy Magnus is pictured on the middeck of Atlantis less than 24 hours before the shuttle undocked from the International Space Station. July 17, 2011

Floating in Raffaello
This image shows STS-135 Commander Chris Ferguson in the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module on flight day 10 of Atlantis’ final mission for the Shuttle Space Program.

The photo serves as the “after” shot following a great amount of work by joint crews from Atlantis and the International Space Station to transfer supplies to and from the two spacecraft. July 17, 2011

Inside Zvezda
Inside the Zvezda service module on the International Space Station, space shuttle Atlantis and station crew members take a break from an extremely busy work agenda for photos and a social period.

The STS-135 crew consists of Commander Chris Ferguson, Pilot Doug Hurley, Mission Specialists Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim; the Expedition 28 or station crew members are JAXA astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, NASA astronauts Ron Garan and Mike Fossum, and Russian cosmonauts Andrey Borisenko, Alexander Samokutyaev and Sergei Volkov. Old Glory in Orbit
The crews of STS-135 and Expedition 28 float on the International Space Station with a U.S. flag that was flown on the first space shuttle mission, STS-1, in 1981. The flag returned to orbit on this mission to be presented to the space station crew. It will remain onboard until the next crew launched from the U.S. retrieves it for return to Earth. It will then fly from Earth again, with the crew that launches from the U.S. on a journey of exploration beyond Earth orbit.

The STS-135 crew consists of NASA astronauts Chris Ferguson, Doug Hurley, Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim; the Expedition 28 crew members are JAXA astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, NASA astronauts Ron Garan and Mike Fossum, and Russian cosmonauts Andrey Borisenko, Alexander Samokutyaev and Sergei Volkov. Shuttle and station commanders Ferguson and Borisenko are in the 12 o’clock and six o’clock positions, respectively, on the circle. July 15, 2011

Debt ceiling drama

By Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) – Perhaps the most abhorrent bit of chicanery has been the threat that if a deal is not reached to increase the debt by August 2nd, social security checks may not go out. In reality, the Chief Actuary of Social Security confirmed last week that current Social Security tax receipts are more than enough to cover current outlays. The only reason those checks would not go out would be if the administration decided to spend those designated funds elsewhere.

It is very telling that the administration would rather frighten seniors dependent on social security checks than alarm their big banking friends, who have already received $5.3 trillion in bailouts, stimulus and quantitative easing. This instance of trying to blackmail Congress into tax increases by threatening social security demonstrates how scary it is to be completely dependent on government promises and why many young people today would jump at the chance to opt out of Social Security altogether. more> http://twurl.nl/2wwkde

By Sinead Carew and Poornima Gupta – Cisco Systems plans to cut 15 percent of its jobs and sell a factory as part of a plan to cut annual expenses by $1 billion.

The cuts come after Cisco’s chief executive John Chambers said in April that the company lost its way.

The company had 73,408 employees as of the end of the last quarter, a spokeswoman said. Cisco will transfer 5,000 to contract manufacturer Foxconn which will buy a Cisco plant in Juarez, Mexico. Of the other 6,500 who are leaving, 2,100 will get early retirement. more> http://twurl.nl/ue724h

India Sees Growth Imperiled With Greek-Like Tax Evasion

BOOK REVIEW
The Black Economy in India, Author: Arun Kumar

By Tushar Dhara and Cherian Thomas – India loses 14 trillion rupees ($314 billion) from tax evasion annually, depriving it of funds for investment in roads, ports and power, said Arun Kumar, author of “The Black Economy in India.”

India’s post-independence tax and regulatory code created incentives to keep transactions outside the tax system. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh began attacking that structure as finance minister in 1991, accelerating tax cuts and reducing the bureaucracy. The top individual income tax rate is now 30 percent, from 97.5 percent in 1971. more> http://twurl.nl/o7yhhn
