Reid: ‘I’m the Senate majority leader. Why don’t I know about this deal?’

By Alexander Bolton – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) confronted White House budget director Jack Lew during a Thursday afternoon meeting about secret talks on a deficit-reduction deal between the president and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

“I’m the Senate majority leader — why don’t I know about this deal?” Reid demanded as soon as the budget director walked into the historic Mansfield Room for a meeting with Senate Democrats, according to a lawmaker who witnessed the exchange.

Lew shot back: “If there’s a deal, then the president doesn’t know about it, the vice president doesn’t know about it and I don’t know about it.” more> http://twurl.nl/f5cc23

‘Freaky mouse’ defeats common poison

R&D Mag – Michael Kohn, an associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Rice, said the mice evolved to become poison-resistant following two distinct processes. In one, point mutation, genes adapt through spontaneous mutations during DNA replication. Algerian mice (Mus spretus), a desert-dwelling, seed-eating species, probably acquired the mutation this way to counter a vitamin K-deficient diet, Kohn says.

Evolution through point mutation is a textbook example of how populations adapt to new environments, he says. Because rodents reproduce so quickly, their adaptation to warfarin is one of the few that can be observed directly during the lifetimes of evolutionary geneticists. The poisons were introduced in the early 1950s, and poison-resistant rodents began to appear in the 1960s. more> http://twurl.nl/6owlix

Wave power exceeds expectations

Climax/WordPress.com – A wave power developer has said tests of a device off Scotland’s coast exceeded expectations.

US-based Ocean Power Technologies (OPT), which also has offices in Warwick, Warwickshire, deployed the machine from Invergordon, Easter Ross. The trials of the PB150 PowerBuoy required the consent of the Scottish government.

OPT has also been developing wave energy devices for powering US Navy and Marine Corps bases. OPT said it had successfully deployed the PB150 PowerBuoy off the coast of Scotland on 15 April 2011. It said initial reported power levels for the system had outperformed expectations. more> http://twurl.nl/spi2w8
