Video: BallCam Puts Football Fans on the Field

By Charles Murray – Prototype device known as the BallCam might one day enable fans to see the action from the ball’s point of view, providing a different perspective when a pass sails into the hands of a receiver or a punt falls into the arms of a returner.

To create that experience, Kris Kitani, a post-doctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute worked with visiting researchers at the Robotics Institute and from the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo. Together, they embedded a single GoPro Hero2 camera in a rubber-sheathed, plastic foam football, then wrote software to make the spinning images usable. more> http://tinyurl.com/bsrkpvp

Surveillance Camera System Searches Through 36 Million Faces In One Second

DigInfo TV – Developed by Hitachi Kokusai Electric, the system can automatically detect a face from either surveillance footage or a regular photo, and search for it. This surveillance camera system can search through data on 36 million faces in one second.

With this system, it’s assumed that faces are turning within around 30 degrees in the horizontal and vertical directions from the camera, and the faces are at least 40 x 40 pixels in size. more> http://is.gd/PULgk3

Ultimate slow motion

By Larry Hardesty – Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers have created a new imaging system that can acquire visual data at a rate of one trillion exposures per second.

The system relies on a recent technology called a streak camera, deployed in a totally unexpected way. The aperture of the streak camera is a narrow slit. Particles of light—photons—enter the camera through the slit and pass through an electric field that deflects them in a direction perpendicular to the slit. Because the electric field is changing very rapidly, it deflects late-arriving photons more than it does early-arriving ones. more> http://twurl.nl/fo30ws
