By Brendan Sasso – Advocacy groups and politicians from across the political spectrum have taken up “Internet freedom” as their rallying cry in recent months.

On Tuesday (July 3), a coalition of more than 100 advocacy groups unveiled their “Declaration of Internet Freedom,” and libertarian groups TechFreedom and the Competitive Enterprise Institute quickly countered with their own alternative Internet freedom proposal.

But converting the enthusiasm for Internet freedom into specific policy goals may prove difficult because of how differently people understand what “freedom” means. more> http://tinyurl.com/6r7m5ah

A Clunky Cyberstrategy

Washington Preaches Internet Freedom
But Practices Surveillance

By Rebecca MacKinnon – On Monday (Apr 23, 2012), President Barack Obama said of the Internet and mobile technologies that they, “should be in place to empower citizens, not suppress them.”

In the Internet age, it is technically trivial for corporations and governments to gain access to people’s private communications and track their movements. The Obama administration recognizes that online freedom requires not only an open and uncensored Internet, but also one on which government and corporate surveillance powers are appropriately constrained, so that citizens are protected against abuse, and abusers are held accountable.

Even as the White House clamps down in Iran and Syria, other parts of the U.S. government are driving the development of policies, regulatory norms, and business practices that make a mockery of Washington’s well-meaning efforts to expand Internet freedom abroad.

But, the U.S. global Internet freedom agenda will only succeed in the long run if the United States can find a way to live up to its own values. more> http://is.gd/BAEYtk

By Declan McCullagh – Last-minute opposition to the CISPA, which has been criticized as a “Big Brother” cybersecurity bill, is growing as the U.S. House of Representatives prepares for a vote this week.

Rep. Ron Paul, the Texas Republican and presidential candidate, warned in a statement and YouTube video today that CISPA (PDF) represents the “latest assault on Internet freedom.” Paul warned that “CISPA is Big Brother writ large,” and said that he hopes that “the public responds to CISPA as it did to SOPA back in January.” more> http://is.gd/f2TV9c
