Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (4)

Preparing for Testing
NASA – Standing five stories tall fully stacked, the Launch Abort System was mounted atop the Orion MPCV, or Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, last week at the Lockheed Martin’s facilities near Denver. Orion is being prepared for the next round of testing in an acoustic chamber. Each test will expose the Orion MPCV and its launch abort system to acoustic levels exceeding 150 decibels while instruments record the vehicle’s response.

The test vehicles will provide critical data used to model the spacecraft’s capabilities to perform deep space exploration missions. The vehicles will undergo testing at sound pressure levels that emulate those experienced at launch and in the event an abort is needed to carry the crew to safety away from a potential problem on the launch pad or during ascent Image Credit: Lockheed Martin

Geithner, Bernanke have little in arsenal to fight new crisis

By Zachary A. Goldfarb and Neil Irwin – As two of the architects of the United States’ own financial rescue starting in 2008, they had eschewed half-measures, instead marshaling hundreds of billions of dollars to bail out the banks and successfully head off a new Great Depression.

But as the pair again donned the cloak of crisis fighters, their efforts underscored what’s changed in the last three years. The men, battle-hardened and more experienced, now have little more than the power of persuasion. No longer can they muster the same range of policy tools and supporters they had in 2008 should the European crisis become an even greater menace to the U.S. economy. more> http://is.gd/bDm3lo

‘Supercomittee’ members have busy fundraising calendar

By Kevin Bogardus – The senators and House members on the panel that has been tasked to come up with an at least $1.5 trillion deficit reduction package by Thanksgiving were selected for their seniority and prominence in their respective parties. That status though also entails a full fundraising calendar every year to help other candidates, which will likely have the supercommittee members being feted by lobbyists and donors for interests that will be hugely affected by the panel’s work. more> http://is.gd/fT7QmU

Large Manufacturers Need Common Sense, Too

By TJ McDermott – Today we are gathered here to impeach a major industrial controls manufacturer for lacking some basic common sense…

The rest of the family shows the same seemingly random arrangement of wire terminals to status LEDs. Unfortunately for OEMs, integrators, and end-user maintenance crews, this I/O family comes from a manufacturer very popular with end users. This lack of common sense leads directly to installation and troubleshooting mistakes.

I ask you, the jury, to find this manufacturer guilty of having no common sense. This causes mistakes. Mistakes can cause damage. Damage costs money. Unfortunately, this court cannot levy fines against the defendant, so I ask the jury to impose the severest penalty possible: ridicule by the defendant’s customers.

In all seriousness, now, what were they thinking? Were they thinking? more> http://is.gd/RxP8GJ

Google to Buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 Billion

By Brian Womack and Zachary Tracer – Google Inc. (GOOG), maker of the Android mobile-phone software, agreed to buy smartphone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for $12.5 billion in its biggest deal, gaining mobile patents and expanding in the hardware business.

Larry Page, Google’s co-founder who took over as chief executive officer in April, is transforming Google into a smartphone maker to take on Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone and gain more clout in the wireless business. Motorola Mobility, under pressure to seek strategic changes by activist investor Carl Icahn, gives Google more than 17,000 patents the company can leverage in negotiations with competitors such as Apple. more> http://is.gd/pdLoBg
